Behind the Scenes with Lloyd Hartley
Behind the Scenes with Lloyd Hartley
Lloyd Hartley is an award-winning architecture practice, specialising in high-end residential homes and renovations.
We’re drawn to projects that allow us to stretch our creative muscles, whether that’s a site with spatial challenges, an existing home with a layout that isn’t working, or a bold idea that needs architectural input.
At the heart of our philosophy lies the belief that our role isn’t to design buildings that carry the Lloyd Hartley signature; but to reflect the intention of each client.
Our Approach to Residential Architecture & Project Management
While the outcome of every project we undertake is unique, they start with the same approach; we ask the right questions, we listen closely, and we proactively problem-solve.
As the project develops, ideas are tested against what the site allows, the wishlist or ideas our client has shared, and any budget constraints. Kitchens, bathrooms, joinery, even the interior design and landscaping can be factored into the process, with each part developed in relation to the others, so the final project reads as a cohesive whole.
The aim is to find the perfect balancing point where all elements make sense in relation to each other.
The Team Behind Lloyd Hartley Architects
Lloyd Hartley is led by Ben Lloyd and Mike Hartley, and complemented by our wider team, all of whom are NZIA-affiliated and NZRAB Registered Architects.
Rather than each project being defined by a single voice, we collaborate to share, question, and refine ideas as they move forward, meaning our clients get the benefit of a diverse group of professionals considering their project from different viewpoints.

Working with Lloyd Hartley
Aligned Intentions
S RESIDENCE
Working with Lloyd Hartley was a pleasure, their intentions were always aligned to mine, and their ability to adapt and respond to the evolving vision I had as a client made it a very enjoyable process. Meeting and discussing design choices, material ideas, and working through all the home’s features makes me want to do it all again, inside the bright line of course.

Attention to Detail
POOLSCAPE
Lloyd Hartley developed several concepts answering our varying briefs as we worked through what we wanted to achieve with our 1930’s bungalow. The end result is a fantastic solution that provides a lot of amenity for our family and many visitors. Mike assembled a great team of consultants to assist in the process and his attention to detail with design co-ordination resulted in very few (if any) clashes on site during the build phase.
